PUTTING ESSENTIAL OILS TO THE TEST –

While at convention last week, we had the opportunity to learn more about the Oklahoma University study on On Guard. I have referenced this study in the past, but it is now published and available for review at

This study suggests and supports the powerful antiviral effects of On Guard. The study concluded that this essential oil blend significantly (90%) attenuates influenza virus PR8, suggesting that the antiviral effect may be due to “inhibition of viral protein translation.”

Despite antibiotics not being able to treat the influenza virus, results show On Guard Protective Blend reducing this virus by up to 90% . The single oils contained in this blend are: Wild Orange, Clove Bud, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus radiata, and Rosemary.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to put this to the test, in a practical application. My son attended nursery during Sunday School, at church last Sunday. As often occurs in a day care setting, he contracted a virus, which first presented about 40 hours later. At around 9AM Tuesday morning, it was as though someone flipped a light switch. He went from a bouncing, happy, two year old, to a very sick little boy. He was crying that he hurt, had a fever, and his eyes had that red, glazed sick appearance.

I know how important it is to act quickly when it comes to viral duplication. Here’s why: When something extreme happens in our body to upset our homeostasis, i.e. we don’t get enough sleep, toxic overload, too much white sugar, extreme stress, traveling, work and school deadlines, etc, our immune system is weakened and our bodies allow a virus to attach onto a cell.

The virus then injects the virus DNA into that cell and the newly infected cell begins to duplicate. Fast. It creates thousands of “copy” virus cells, and as a result we get sick. Our body then has to work overtime to kill and clear out all the infected cells.

The study done by the University of Oklahoma suggests that the oil “OnGuard” was 90% effective against stopping an infected virus cell from duplicating. In other words, if you start treating a virus with OnGuard as soon as you start to feel it coming on, you will slow or prevent the duplication of the viral cell. Fewer viral cells mean that either you don’t get sick (that’s optimal) or your body makes way fewer copies of the virus cell, thus making it easier to kill the fewer amount of sick cells and helping you get over the sickness quickly.

It’s important to note here that there is a window. If you catch it early (before your body makes tons of copy cells) then you’ll prevent the worst. If you miss the window and your body has already made thousands and thousands of virus cell copies, you’re probably going to go through the 5-10 days of cleaning out the sick cells.

With my two year old, I started working with the oils immediately. I put On Guard in the diffuser. I applied On Guard to the bottom of his feet every 2-3 hours. I applied Melaleuca to his spine. I made a little syrup with agave and some lemon with a TINY amount of On Guard. He didn’t like it, but we got one spoonful in him. We gave him a warm bath with Melaleuca and Lavender bath salts.

By dinnertime, he was already showing signs of improvement. He stopped crying and complaining of “pain.” His energy returned. By this morning, he was back to normal. Less than 24 hours! That is amazing. Essential oils really do have the power to kill viruses. They are SAFE! They are NATURAL! They are EFFECTIVE! I absolutely know that in my home we have either averted illness completely, or reduced the duration and degree of symptoms, thanks to our essential oils. I have witnessed it over and over again. And, now science is supporting what we already know. Essential oils are the best tool in my medicine chest, and the only tool that really helps fight viruses! Are you prepared?

  • Essential oils are the regenerating, oxygenating, and immune defense properties of plants.
  • Essential oils are so small in molecular size that they can quickly penetrate the skin.
  • Essential oils are lipid soluble and are capable of penetrating cell walls, even if they have hardened because of oxygen deficiency. In fact, essential oils can affect every cell of the body within 20 minutes and then be metabolized like other nutrients.
  • Essential oils contain oxygen molecules which help to transport nutrients to the starving human cells. By providing the needed oxygen, essential oils also work to stimulate the immune system.
  • Essential oils are very powerful antioxidants. Antioxidants create an unfriendly environment for free radicals. They prevent mutations, work as free radical scavengers, prevent fungus, and prevent oxidation in the cells.
  • Essential oils are antibacterial, anticancer, antifungal, anti-infectious, antimicrobial, antitumor, antiparasitic, antiviral, and antiseptic. They have been proven to destroy all tested bacteria and viruses.
  • Essential oils may detoxify the cells and blood in the body.
  • Essential oils containing sesquiterpenes have the ability to pass the blood brain barrier, enabling them to be effective in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Multiple Sclerosis.
  • When diffused, essential oils remove metallic particles and toxins from the air; increase atmospheric oxygen; increase ozone and negative ions in the area, which inhibits bacterial growth; destroys odors from mold, cigarettes, and animals; and fills air with fresh aromatic scent.
  • Essential Oils promote emotional, physical and spiritual healing.” (Modern Essentials, 2nd edition)

I read an article this morning on diet soda that I felt needed to be shared. For those of you who know me, you know this has been my vice for nearly 20 years. I remember when my habit started – in an old kitchen in La Mesa, when my boyfriend opened a vintage refrigerator and pulled out a can of Diet Coke. The rest was history. I had recognized my habit was out of control, but I could never endure the withdrawal headaches and cravings. However, I am still holding strong on my 2011 resolution, and have no desire to go back! In fact, I no longer even salivate at the sight of an icy glass of DC!

Although this doesn’t have much to do with essential oils, I think it’s a great article on wellness, and of course nutrition and toxic insult have more to do with our overall wellness than essential oils. But, for me, there is an interesting connection between essential oils and diet sodas. It was not until I began my journey with doTERRA essential oils, that I found the desire and strength to quit. I also felt like the withdrawal was greatly reduced, which I can’t explain. The headaches and cravings were not as bad as I previously had experienced. The oils also made it more interesting because I could use them to flavor that boring H2O! A little lemon or lime essential oil, added to water, really helps spice it up! Another tip I have learned when you are trying to break free of sodas: pour a glass of Perrier over ice, and add a couple drops of Lime Essential Oil. Yummy.

Here is the article by Thomas J. Boud, MD, who is board certified in family medicine:

Patients often ask me how they can lose weight. As we discuss the balance between their caloric expenditure versus their caloric intake, the subject of beverages inevitably arises.

For now, let’s skip the whole caffeine subject. I won’t even focus on the regular calorie soft drinks sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. (That one’s really a no-brainer.)
Let’s just consider the commonly misunderstood topic of diet sodas.

I was taught in medical school not to “drink” your calories. High-calorie drinks are too quickly absorbed, don’t have enough fiber, raise blood sugar, spike insulin, and then cause reactive hypoglycemia. How, then, does the low calorie or no calorie artificially sweetened drink fit into all this? It’s confusing.

Here in the United States the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of six different artificial sweeteners: stevia, aspartame, sucralose, neotame, acesulfame potassium, and saccharin. Each one is many times sweeter than sugar and can be used in small doses to sweeten products, making their caloric contribution negligible. Each is used in various foods based on the chemical’s innate characteristics, such as stability to heat, aftertaste, texture, etc.

These products have been the source of intensive controversy regarding their potential health risks. Artificial sweeteners have been blamed for causing everything from impotency to cancer. Hundreds of toxicological, clinical, and post marketing studies have been performed and reviewed in detail trying to establish a link to any of these adverse side effects. Here’s what the literature shows: when used in accordance with established FDA guidelines, these products are considered safe for consumption as long as the volume is kept within the recommended acceptable daily intake (ADI). Each ADI varies based on which artificial sweetener is used. There are over 100 regulatory agencies from numerous countries around the world that concur with the safety of these additives.

Diet sodas are okay then, right? Not quite. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Dr. Boud—don’t mess with this one. It’s the one vice I’m allowed.”

I agree that there are worse things to get hooked on. But the reality is that several studies show that drinking diet sodas doesn’t really help with weight loss. There are several theories on why this occurs. One is based on the brain’s response to the sweetness in diet sodas, which triggers a craving of more calories and more sugar. This perpetuates itself, and you keep on eating and drinking until your intake of calories exceeds your expenditure of calories.

It becomes very easy to lose track of the amount you drink during the day. Do you really have any idea how much volume you are putting down the hatch? Recently a patient told me it’s cheaper for her to fill up a 64-ounce jug of soda every morning at the gas station than to buy a smaller 12-ounce can—and she gets to just sip it throughout the work day. Besides it keeps her awake.

I’ll let you guess what health problem she was in to talk to me about.

Despite not having many calories, diet sodas still have a known association with increased weight, diabetes, hypertension, and, most recently, stroke risk. One theory for this is the body’s reactive release of the hormone insulin when it recognizes the sweet taste in artificially sweetened products. Insulin is a storage hormone and will put circulating glucose into storage (a.k.a. fat cells) causing a paradoxical drop in blood sugar. This then can stimulate appetite, promote further carbohydrate cravings, and cause you to seek out high calorie snacks for quick energy. Either way, diet or non-diet, you end up having an insulin surge with a resulting hypoglycemic crash, leaving you feeling tired and grumpy, with increased difficulty concentrating. The only way to avoid this roller coaster ride is to constantly keep your blood sugar up—which just leads to more empty calories, higher circulating insulin levels, and presto—you’re a typical overweight American.

So what do we do? I like the principle of moderation. It’s good for us to cut back on our regular full-calorie beverages. It’s even better to limit our consumption of diet sodas. I believe it’s best to focus on good old H2O. Let that be our drink of choice.

Now let’s get healthy!

What is an essential oil?

17 Feb

Essential   oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots,   flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully   fragrant. If you have ever enjoyed the gift of a rose, a walk by a field of   lavender, or the smell of fresh cut mint, you have experienced the aromatic   qualities of essential oils. In addition to giving plants their distinctive   smells, essential oils provide plants with protection against predators and   disease and play a role in plant pollination.

Essential   oils are non water-based phytochemicals made up of volatile organic compounds.   Although they are fat soluble, they do not include fatty lipids or acids found   in vegetable and animal oils. Essential oils are very clean, almost crisp, to   the touch and are immediately absorbed by the skin. Pure, unadulterated   essential oils are translucent and range in color from crystal clear to deep   blue.

Try this at home: Squeeze the peel of a ripe orange. The fragrant residue   on your hand is full of essential oils.

In   addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to   people, essential oils have been used throughout history in many cultures for   their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. Modern scientific study and trends   towards more holistic approaches to wellness are driving a revival and new   discovery of essential oil health applications.
